Motorcycle Adventures For Women: Conquer The Open Road Without Fear

Secreto Travel Women Only Biketours

Hello, adventurer! You’ve got your motorcycle license in your pocket - and maybe, just maybe, you’ve also had these daydreams: you and your bike, far away from daily routines, surrounded by stunning landscapes. The sun is shining, the engine is humming, the wind in your hair, and ahead of you lies nothing but the wide-open horizon.

LIVE YOUR DREAMS!

Exploring new roads, discovering unknown landscapes, and immersing yourself in exciting cultures every day – doesn’t that sound like a dream? I had the same dream: a “real” motorcycle journey. And I turned it into reality! (Read more about it in the blog post: Venturing Into the Unknown: A Woman, a Motorcycle, and My Solo Trip Through Southern Africa.)

Of course, I had my doubts. More than once, I was close to giving up. Should I wait until someone could come with me? Isn’t it too unsafe to travel alone? And what if something happens along the way? These thoughts are completely normal, but I can’t tell you how glad I am that I didn’t let them hold me back.

The experience of that journey – with all its highs and lows – became a major milestone in my life. If I hadn’t hit the road back then and proven to myself what I’m capable of, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I wouldn’t have become the person I am, and I might never have found the courage to pursue my passion professionally. But more on that later…

In this article, I want to help ease any fears you might have about the idea of taking a solo motorcycle trip as a woman. I’ll also show you an option for making this dream a reality without going it alone – if that’s what you prefer. First, let me tell you something, even though I don’t know you personally:

1. YOU ARE STRONGER AND MORE CAPABALE THAN YOU THINK

Maybe you’ve been riding for a while and feel confident, or maybe you’re new to motorcycles and a bit nervous about taking longer trips. But hey, you earned your motorcycle license! You made it through training, tests, and countless hours on the bike. That’s not something just anyone does. You’ve already proven to yourself that you can do it, and that’s a fantastic foundation for building your confidence.

From personal experience, I can assure you: whether you’ve been riding for years or just started, you’ll grow with every mile on a motorcycle journey. Each day on the bike, every little victory along the way, will make you stronger.

My first few kilometres on Namibia’s gravel roads were anything but encouraging. On the contrary, they were such a disaster that I turned back and changed my route. “Stick to paved roads for now,” I told myself at the time. And that was perfectly okay. You’ll also realize that it’s not about being perfectly prepared or skilled right from the start. The journey itself teaches you everything you need to know. In the end, you’ll look back proudly on all the small and big moments you’ve experienced.

2. WHAT IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG?

One common concern that holds many women back from travelling solo is the fear of a breakdown. These worries are valid, of course. A little preparation can go a long way here.

There are some basic skills you can learn in advance to feel more prepared for technical issues. Modern motorcycles are very reliable, and many minor issues can be resolved easily if you know what to do. Some motorcycle clubs even offer workshops where you can learn the fundamentals of maintenance and repair. Think of it as a great opportunity to bond with your bike.

You’ll see – when you face a challenge with enough knowledge to tackle it head-on, instead of feeling helpless, it becomes far less intimidating.

Plus, the motorcycle community is global and incredibly supportive. Fellow riders rarely leave each other stranded, and there’s almost always someone nearby who can help. Imagine the sense of accomplishment when you handle a small hiccup on your own—not only will it give you an incredible feeling of empowerment, but it will also make every future trip less stressful.

So, go ahead—dream big, plan your journey, and take that first step. You’ve already got everything you need: determination, courage, and the open road calling your name.

3. LESS LUGGAGE, MORE FREEDOM

Motorcycle trips are the perfect opportunity to discover how little you really need. You’re already familiar with the weight of your motorcycle, and you know it’s not always the easiest thing to handle. Now imagine adding a fully loaded setup on top of that… exactly. I learned the hard way that less really is more in this case.

In true German fashion, I had packed for every possible scenario I might encounter: spare parts, tools, food, camping gear – Plan A through Z, all neatly arranged on my bike.

And, as you might expect, my very first day on the road taught me a valuable lesson: there was no way I could keep going like that. I had to sort through my stuff and ditch the excess weight. Today, I pack entirely differently from the start.

Think carefully about what you truly need for your trip. Sacrificing a few comfort items is more than worth it for the freedom of riding a lighter bike. Many things can be purchased locally, sometimes even more affordably than back home. Travelling light is an adventure in itself. You’ll notice how free you feel – physically and mentally – when you’re only carrying the essentials.

So, leave that extra bag at home and enjoy the incredible feeling of hitting the road without unnecessary baggage!

4. SAFETY ON THE ROAD: PLANNING IS KEY

Safety is, of course, a top priority – especially when travelling alone. But the good news is that if you follow a few basic principles, a motorcycle trip can be safe. Choose your routes carefully, prioritize secure accommodations, and plan some of your stops ahead of time so you know where you’ll be staying overnight.

It’s always a good idea to arrive at your destination before nightfall. This allows you to settle in and start the next day feeling relaxed and secure. If you ever feel uneasy in a certain area, trust your instincts. There are countless safe and beautiful routes waiting to be explored. With a charged phone and a bit of caution, you’ll navigate your journey with ease. And if you ever need assistance, you can always call someone or ask locals for advice – they’re often friendly and willing to help.

5. YOUR MOTORCYCLE: A WINDOW TO THE WORLD

What sets a motorcycle journey apart from other forms of travel is one key element: you’re fully immersed in your surroundings and experience everything firsthand. The sensation of sitting on your bike, cruising along the road, feeling the wind through your helmet, and watching the scenery pass by – that’s freedom in its purest form. There’s no glass separating you from the world around you.

You breathe in the scents of your surroundings, feel every twist and turn, and notice how the landscape gradually changes. You’re not just observing – you’re a part of it. This creates a unique connection to the environment, turning every ride into an unforgettable experience.

This feeling is hard to put into words – it’s something you must experience for yourself. There’s nothing quite like it. Every time you ride, it will remind you why motorcycling is your passion and what drives you deep inside.

6. “I DON’T HAVE ANYONE TO RIDE WITH” – TRAVELLING SOLO CAN BE AMAZING

Maybe you haven’t dared to travel alone yet because it feels safer or more comfortable to have someone with you. But travelling solo is something truly special, offering you a sense of freedom you might not have experienced before. You decide when to leave, where to go, and how long to stay. If you feel like stopping spontaneously at a cozy café or taking a small detour, you can do so without having to consult anyone.

And don’t worry: travelling solo doesn’t mean you’ll be lonely. Along the way, you’ll almost naturally meet other travellers – especially if you’re riding on popular motorcycle routes. Conversations with fellow bikers, encounters at small guesthouses, or curious questions from locals will enrich your journey and might even lead to lifelong friendships. I’ve found that solo travellers are often more open to meeting new people than those travelling with companions or in a group.

7. SOUNDS GREAT… BUT WHAT IF I STILL DON’T WANT TO RIDE ALONE?

If riding alone isn’t for you, that’s perfectly okay. There’s a solution for everything. In this case, you could consider joining a small group on an organized motorcycle tour. Since my first bike trip, I’ve met countless women who share the same dream – women eager for new experiences and adventures. But I’ve also met women who prefer not to travel alone, who prioritize safety, community, and mutual support during their journeys.
