Tour Programme
Day 1: Arrival & Welcome to Djerba
You will be picked up from Djerba Airport and taken to the Radisson Blue Hotel (~30 min).
In the evening, there will be an opportunity to get to know each other better and have dinner at the hotel.
Day 2: Djerba to Matmata
Our journey starts off relaxed, driving from Djerba to Matmata via paved roads and a bit of off-road tracks. For those interested, there is the option to visit the Star Wars hotel and the traditional Berber cave dwellings.
In Matmata, we have a great option for dinner. Matmata Ancienne is a charming little mountain village. We’ll stay overnight in a “Berber hotel” – simple but beautiful! (Note: Only double and four-person rooms are available here.)
Distance today: ~150 km
Roads: Mostly paved, a little gravel
Day 3: Matmata – Zraoua – Ksar Ghilane
From the Berber village of Matmata, we head towards Zraoua, partly on gravel tracks, partly on paved roads. Zraoua is another old mountain village, but it is completely abandoned, offering a very impressive sight.
Continuing on paved roads with a little gravel, we head toward the Ksar Ghilane oasis on the edge of the Tunisian Sahara. We will encounter our first sandy stretches. In Ksar Ghilane, you can take a bath in the hot spring.
We will stay overnight in a traditional local hotel.
Distance today: ~110 km
Roads: Paved & gravel, first sandy stretches
Day 4: Rest & Dune Training Day
Today, we have time for an introduction to sand riding. First, we’ll visit the Roman fort. Then, we’ll ride a little further south from the oasis into the sand, heading to the Ain Essebat Desert Camp. Here, we can relax, enjoy the pool, and, most importantly, have plenty of sand right outside the door for anyone who wants to try themselves and their bikes in the dunes.
To get to Ain Essebat camp, we’ll mostly be on roads, tracks, and a short sandy section.
Distance today: ~40 km
Day 5: Ain Essebat to Chenini
We’ll encounter very little sand today, and instead ride beautiful gravel tracks and a bit of paved road. The mountain roads offer stunning views of the impressive landscape.
Chenini is made up of houses carved into the stone, and the hotel here follows the “cave dwelling” style. Here, we can enjoy the peace and admire the barren yet spectacular mountain scenery.
Distance today: ~100 km
Roads: Gravel, little sand
Day 6: Chenini – Douiret – Tataouine
We’ll continue on paved roads to Douiret, where we’ll find another old, abandoned village built into the mountainside. A narrow gravel path leads us up, where we can explore a few houses and enjoy the view. Then, we’ll head to the capital of the Tataouine Governorate. 25 km southeast is one of the most famous storage fortresses (Ksar Ouled Soltane), which also served as a filming location for Star Wars. The visit is free and definitely worth it.
Distance today: ~70 km
Roads: Paved & gravel
Day 7: Tataouine to Djerba
Today, we’ll ride a little bit of off-road, but mostly on paved roads, as we make our way back to Djerba and the Radisson Blu. We’ll load up the motorcycles onto the trailer, and then have some free time to relax by the pool or on the beach.
Distance today: ~140 km
Roads: Paved & gravel
Day 8: Departure
Flights typically depart early in the morning from Djerba. You’ll be taken to the airport.
