Your Travel Destination
Your journey begins in Tofo. The domestic airport in Inhambane is located about 30 minutes away. Inhambane is best reached from the airports in Johannesburg (South Africa) or Maputo (Mozambique).
Tofo is a small, friendly Mozambican fishing village with a modest tourist infrastructure. In addition to local Mozambican offerings, European and other expatriates have settled here and developed a tourist scene characterized by tranquility, spirituality and individuality.
A hidden gem, Tofo remains untouched by mass tourism, making it a true insider’s tip among the world’s paradises.
Your Accomodation
Find inspiration and soul at the beautiful Kumba Lodge! The rooms are spacious, stylish, comfortable and simple, offering you a direct view of the spectacular Mozambican coast, depending on the room category. The pool and the yoga chalet provide a breathtaking view over the Indian Ocean.
Kumba Lodge has its own restaurant and bar, offering delicious and healthy meals that complement the yoga ambiance.
In Tofo, there are plenty of options for provisions. Additional restaurants and small supermarkets can always be found in the village.
Your Tailor-Made Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival & Welcome in Tofo
You will arrive at Inhambane Airport, where a driver will pick you up and take you to Kumba Lodge. Take some time to settle in, relax and enjoy the atmosphere.
Day 2: Ocean Safari
The Ocean Safari is a special highlight, offering you the chance to search for whale sharks, dolphins and other marine life to snorkel with. The tour departs from one of the dive bases in Tofo, which is about a 15–20-minute walk along the beach.
More information about the tour can be found below.
Day 3: Beach Magic
Day 4: Traditional Sailing Tour & Seahorse Snorkelling
Enjoy a day tour in the tropical tidal flats of Barra, home to numerous juvenile fish, starfish, sea urchins and seahorses.
On a traditional wooden sailing boat, you will start in the shallow waters and head towards a small island village. A truly authentic and exciting adventure.
More information can be found below.
Day 5: Rest & Chill
After yesterday’s long day tour, it’s time to take a break today. Tofo is a place of tranquillity and slow living. Enjoy the pool, the sun and maybe a good book.
If you need more action, you can book a surfing lesson in the village.
Day 6: Inhambane City Tour
Today is all about culture. You will take a private transfer to the nearest larger city: Inhambane. A personal guide will show you the local market, special buildings and other interesting spots. You can plan for about half a day.
More information can be found below.
Day 7: Tranquil Mozambique
You have another day at your disposal. Perhaps a culinary lunch outing to a local restaurant?
You might also be interested in an introductory dive. During humpback whale season, you also have the opportunity to take a whale-watching tour. More information can be found below.
Day 8: Kayaking & Barra
The mangroves around the Barra area are great for kayaking. On a guided 2-hour tour, you will paddle through shallow, calm waters. Afterwards, your driver will take you to a nice restaurant or beach bar with dining options. Whatever suits your mood.
Day 9: Relaxation & Rest
Your last full day in the paradise of Tofo should bring you relaxation and rest. We recommend spending your last evening at a great restaurant like “Sumi” or “Tofo Tofo.”
Day 10: Farewell to Paradise
Depending on your flight time, you will be taken to Inhambane Airport to begin your journey home. With wonderful memories and a sense of relaxation, you will head back home.
Whale Shark Snorkelling
OCEAN SAFARI
Mozambique, especially the southern coast of Tofo, is renowned for its year-round sightings of whale sharks. On our ocean safaris, that is, our snorkelling tours, you have the chance to snorkel with these giants or even with dolphins.
After a thorough briefing about the wildlife you may encounter above and below the water, as well as the behaviour guidelines for snorkelling with whale sharks, our guide and skipper will take you out on a zodiac (maximum 14 participants) and help you look out for large, dark shadows and dorsal fins in the water.
Once a whale shark is spotted, the boat will stop and at the skipper’s command, you’ll have the opportunity to quietly slide into the water.
Don’t worry, the largest shark in the world has no teeth and often moves very leisurely and slowly. The skipper and the boat will accompany you, keep an eye on you at all times and pick you up at the location where you are in the water.
Duration: 2 hours
Activities in and around Tofo
TRADITIONAL SAILING AND SEAHORSE SNORKELLING
Ihr startet in Richtung Barra, einem Ort, der für seine Mangroven und ein tropisches Wattenmeer bekannt ist
You will head towards Barra, a place known for its mangroves and tropical tidal flats, home to numerous young tropical fish. On a dhow – a simple, traditional Mozambican wooden sailing boat – you will sail through a tropical tidal flat to a small village.
Along the way, we will anchor in the turquoise, shallow water and snorkel together.
The shallow marine areas provide shelter for many young reef fish, as well as starfish and sea urchins of all colours. In the seagrass meadows, seahorses make their home. Your guide will show you where to find them. Snorkelling equipment is, of course, provided, but you are also welcome to bring your own gear.
After snorkelling, you will head to the Mozambican village for a sumptuous local lunch. Here, you will also get a small tour of the village, see the school, the health centre, the small village huts and get an insight into how the traditional sailboats are built (if construction is in progress).
With full bellies, you will then sail back and later fall into a deep sleep filled with experiences.
Duration: Full-day tour
KAYAKING
Kayaking is great in the mangroves of Barra. Usually, you will head towards Barra in the morning and specifically into the mangroves. On a guided kayaking tour, you will paddle through the shallow waters in two-person kayaks. There is a chance to spot local birdlife and look out for crabs and starfish in the water.
Afterwards, there is always an opportunity for lunch at a beach bar or a nice restaurant.
Our package includes kayaking, as well as a driver who will take you to Barra and back. Your personal driver is at your disposal for the day.
Duration: Kayaking 2h
INHAMBANE CITY TOUR
Would you like to learn more about history and culture? Our city tour through Inhambane is the perfect opportunity. Ideally, a half-day is filled with a combination of architectural sightseeing, colourful local markets, rural hospitals, local schools and churches. There will also be time for snacks or lunch.
BEACH WALKS
The beaches of Tofo seem endless and you can walk for kilometres encountering only a few people.
It is easy to undertake beach walks on your own. Occasionally, you will come across beach vendors offering fresh coconut water, bracelets and various other items. This may sometimes seem annoying, but a simple “No, thank you” is usually enough. The vendors are harmless and often enjoy a chat.
On selected days, there is also the opportunity to participate in a beach cleanup, often organized by the surrounding dive shops or the Marine Megafauna Foundation. Unfortunately, no place on Earth is spared from plastic, although it is still manageable in Tofo. Nevertheless, every piece of plastic collected counts and prevents it from ending up in the stomachs of marine megafauna.
SWIMMING
The beach is influenced by the tides, and accordingly, the water level is sometimes high and low. The tides also affect the currents along the beach. Therefore, it is strongly advised not to swim alone in deserted sections and to only swim where there are many people (Tofo Bay, near the market). Lifeguards are only present on selected days.
RESTAURANT VISITS & DANCING
Tofo has great restaurants.
Here is a selection of the cuisine you can look forward to: Japanese & Sushi, Indian, Vegetarian/Vegan, Asian Fusion, Mozambican, Italian, South African, Burgers, Fish.
For a small amount of money, you can still eat locally and traditionally. Matapa, a rice dish with cassava leaves (similar to spinach) in a peanut and coconut base, is very popular.
Fish is also still caught locally. Traditional fishermen paddle far into the ocean with wooden boats and bring the catch back to Tofo, which is then available on selected days at the small marketplace.
In the evening and at night, there are music and dance events on selected days. Either with live bands or DJs, usually open-air.
Optional: SURFING
You can book a trial lesson (60 minutes) with a local Mozambican surf instructor, including a beginner board.
Your surf instructor will show you how to stand on the surfboard with dry exercises on the beach. Then you will go straight into the waves, in Tofo Bay. Your surf instructor will be in the water with you and the surfboard and help you catch a good wave. He will give you instructions on how to best stand on the board.
The waves in Tofo are, of course, quite powerful, and you will quickly get tired. You should eat something and drink enough water beforehand to have enough strength. Sun protection is also very important!
The requirement is, of course, that you can swim.
Optional: SCUBA-DIVING
Diving in Tofo is something very special, especially because of encounters with large marine animals and rarely dived reefs.
Biodiversity is one of the main attractions. Depending on the season and luck with nature, there is a chance to see manta rays and other types of rays, turtles, humpback whales, whale sharks, dolphins and sharks.
The reefs consist of a mix of rocks and corals, and special reefs often start at a depth of 20 meters or more. Conditions for divers can therefore be challenging. There are times when deep dive sites can be affected by currents, and shallow sites can be impacted by wave movement. Conditions change daily and are hard to predict, which makes it exciting!
Therefore, diving in Tofo remains flexible regarding the dive schedule and dive site selection. Safety is always the top priority. The requirement is, of course, a diving certificate. Alternatively, diving courses can also be booked.
Optional: WHALE INTERACTION TOUR
On the Whale Interaction Tour, during humpback whale season from June to September/October, you have the opportunity to see the giants from the boat or even in and under the water.
It is an ABSOLUTE HIGHLIGHT: In the African winter, humpback whales migrate from the waters of South Africa northward into the channel between Mozambique and Madagascar, especially humpback whale mothers with calves.
Therefore, on this inflatable boat trip, you have the chance to see these enchanting ocean creatures.
The special feature:
only 1 inflatable boat in the interaction, sustainable and considerate, including a hydrophone to hear whale songs.
