Your Travel Route
Your journey starts in Vilanculos and then takes you to the paradise of Tofo. If you wish, you can extend your trip with the Eswatini Safari Package to Hlane Royal National Park and also make a detour to Maputo, the capital of Mozambique.
Your Accomodation in Tofo
Discover inspiration, tranquillity and lots of soul in the beautiful Kumba Lodge. The units are spacious, stylish, comfortable, simple and give you a front seat to the spectacular Mozambican coastline, depending on the room category. The pool and the Yoga Chalet invite you to enjoy breath-taking views over the Indian Ocean.
The Kumba Lodge features its own restaurant and bar offering delicious, healthy cuisine perfectly suited to the Yoga atmosphere.
In both Tofo and Vilanculos, there are plenty of options for obtaining supplies. You can easily find additional restaurants and small supermarkets within the villages.
Your Tailor-Made Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival & Welcome
Upon your arrival in Vilanculos, you’ll be picked up from the airport and warmly welcomed by our team and a local guide. You’ll be escorted to your accommodation (Baobab Beach or Baraka Beach Lodge), where you can settle in, savour your welcome drink and embrace the relaxed ambiance of this secluded paradise.
In the evening, you’ll join the entire travel group for a traditional Mozambican dinner.
Day 3: Bazaruto Archipelago
Experience an unforgettable boat day trip as you submerge yourself in a forgotten paradise of crystal-clear, turquoise waters, vibrant reef fish, and, if you’re lucky, you might even encounter a sea turtle or two. Of course, we provide snorkeling equipment for your convenience.
Bazaruto is the home of the few remaining dugongs that inhabit its seagrass meadows. Meeting these gentle ocean creatures is a stroke of luck, so keep your eyes peeled!
Lunch will be prepared for you on the pristine, white-gold sandy beach while you ascend the dunes of Bazaruto, rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view.
You’ll have ample time for a leisurely stroll, sunbathing or swimming. This is the moment to unwind and relish in the beauty of the Bazaruto Archipelago to the fullest.
Duration: full-day-tour
Day 5: Drive to Tofo, Arrival & Welcome to Kumba Lodge
At the owner operated Kumba Lodge, you’ll be welcomed with another welcome drink and provided with all the essential information about your accommodation, Tofo and the Yoga schedule, which you can use for free.
It’s time to relax and unwind after the journey. The best way to do that is by relaxing in the infinity pool or taking a walk on the endless sandy beach.
Travel time from Vilanculos to Tofo: approx. 4 hours
Day 7: Traditional Sailing Tour & Seahorses
A fantastic full-day tour awaits you in the morning! You’ll head to Barra, a place known for its mangroves and a tropical tidal flat, home to many tropical juvenile fish. Using a Dhow – a wooden, simple, traditional Mozambican sailboat – you’ll sail through the tropical flat ocean to a small village.
During the journey, you’ll anchor in the turquoise, shallow water and snorkel together. The shallow sea areas provide shelter for many young reef fish, as well as starfish and sea urchins in various colours. Seahorses inhabit the seagrass meadows. Your guide will show you where to find them. We provide snorkelling equipment, but you’re also welcome to bring your own gear on board.
After snorkelling, you’ll head to the Mozambican village for a hearty local lunch. Here, you’ll also get a small tour of the village, see the school, the health centre, the small huts in the village and get an impression of how traditional sailing boats are built (only if in operation).
With full stomachs, we sail back and later fall asleep, full of experiences.
Duration: Full-day tour
Cold drinks can be enjoyed on board for a small fee. Stay hydrated!
Keep your bags as small as possible; the sailboat offers limited space.
Day 9: Ocean Safari & "Matapa"
The Ocean Safari is an opportunity to get to know the wilderness of the sea. On a two-hour guided boat tour along the southern coast of Tofo, we embark on a slow zigzag course in search of whale sharks. This tour offers everyone the unique opportunity to snorkel with these gentle giants.
After a thorough briefing about the wildlife you can potentially encounter above and below the water and the rules for snorkelling with whale sharks, your guide and skipper will take you on a small zodiac (up to 14 participants) and watch out for large, dark shadows and dorsal fins in the water.
Once a whale shark is sighted, the boat stops and on the skipper’s command, you can have the opportunity to quietly slip into the water. Don’t worry; the world’s largest shark has no teeth and is often very slow and gentle. The skipper and the boat will accompany you, keeping you in their sights and picking you up right where you are in the water.
Of course, there is no guarantee of encountering whale sharks; we’re dealing with nature. However, Tofo is one of the few places in the world where we can encounter whale sharks year-round.
With a bit of luck, we may also spot humpback whales in the distance, sometimes very close, as they visit the warm and safe channel between Mozambique and Madagascar to nurse their calves from June to October.
Duration: 2 hours (with preparation and lunch 3 to 4 hours)
Following this exciting ocean safari, your stomach is likely to growl frequently. Therefore, we’d like to give you the option to accompany us to a very authentic, local restaurant where the locals also eat. Cooking is done over an open fire, and you’ll have a choice of 2 to 3 lunch dishes.
Tag 11: Mangroven-Kayaking
In the morning, you’ll head again to Barra and specifically into the mangroves. On a guided kayak tour, you’ll paddle in two-seater kayaks through the shallow waters. There’s a chance to discover the local birdlife and look for crabs and starfish in the water.
If desired by the group, there’s an opportunity for lunch at a beach bar afterwards.
Duration of kayaking: 2 hours
Day 13: Departure or Safari
You’ll leave beautiful Tofo for Eswatini. You’ll be picked up at dawn and embark on a private transfer by minibus (approximately 8 to 9 hours) with numerous drink, toilet and snack breaks in the direction of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland).
Day 2: Cultural Experience
After your breakfast, immerse yourself in the vibrant culture and flavours of this beautiful land by starting your day with a hands-on traditional cooking experience. Begin your culinary journey by learning the secrets of Mozambican cuisine. With the guidance of local chefs, you’ll prepare and savour dishes that are the heart and soul of this region and you’ll have it for lunch.
With your taste buds satisfied, it’s time to get your digestion going and you’ll head back to your accommodation via a short walking trail through the mangroves.
Duration: ½ day
Day 4: Beach Getaway & Sunset Cruise
This day is all about you and the beach life. In the morning, you can admire the sunrise over the turquoise ocean, followed by a hearty breakfast. The white sandy beach is perfect for sunbathing and walking. You can visit the local market, small vendors or local restaurants to taste delicious Mozambican cuisine.
In the late afternoon, you’ll head to the picturesque coast for a breath-taking boat tour into the sunset. As the sun begins its descent over the Indian Ocean, you’ll be on board, gracefully sailing on turquoise waters to admire the red dunes of Vilanculos in all their splendour.
Feel the gentle sea breeze on your face as you admire the kaleidoscope of colours in the sky, painting the horizon with shades of orange, red and violet. The calm sound of the waves and the rocking of the boat create the perfect atmosphere for relaxation and reflection before returning in time for dinner.
Duration of Sunset Cruise: approx. 1.5 to 2 hours
If you find this not action-packed enough for the day and you haven’t had enough of boating and the turquoise sea, we can also organize another day trip (minimum number of participants) to the beautiful Santa Carolina Island (also known as Paradise Island): an abandoned island with a deserted, overgrown luxury hotel complex and great snorkelling opportunity.
Day 6: Inhambane City Tour
Tofo is located in the Inhambane Province, with Inhambane as the nearest major city near the village. Your day will be filled with a combination of architectural sights from the Portuguese colonial era, a colourful local market as well as explanations about local healthcare, schools and churches in the area.
Afterward, we return to Tofo and you’ll have the rest of the day to spend as you wish.
Maybe you’d like to try your first surfing lesson?
Duration of City Tour: 2.5 to 3 hours
Day 8: Relax, Pizza & Drinks
You have time to enjoy the day, relax, explore Tofo or take a walk on the dunes.
Looking for more action? Perhaps you’d like to try “discover scuba-diving”? Or do you have a diving certificate already and want to explore the Mozambican underwater world? This would be the perfect opportunity. We can organize it for you.
In the evening, it’s time for a group dinner. Together, we’ll have pizza at one of Tofo’s rustic, open local restaurants and invite you for a drink (beer or soft drink) in the lively village centre, the marketplace.
Tag 10: Rest & Chill
Tofo is a place of tranquillity and you should savour and take this atmosphere with you. The day is yours to enjoy freely.
If you want to do something and haven’t had enough of the saltwater and the wildlife, we can organize, for example, a whale-watching tour for you, where you can see humpback whales both above and below the water.
Day 12: Mozambican Buffet & Live Music
You have the day to relax and unwind before we head to the “Tofo, Tofo” restaurant in the evening for a traditional Mozambican buffet with live music.
“Tofo, Tofo” is run by a female Mozambican and has a beautiful ambiance on the edge of the local wetlands. It invites local musicians once a week to provide entertainment. The sounds are traditional. Later, a DJ usually takes over and the restaurant turns into a dance floor!
