Your Travel Destination
Lesotho, often called the “Kingdom in the Sky,” offers breathtaking views of the majestic Drakensberg Mountains and a sense of tranquillity as you traverse its high-altitude routes and the awe-inspiring Maletsunyane Falls, one of the highest single-drop waterfalls in the world.
South Africa’s Eastern Cape captivates with its diverse landscapes, from wild coastlines to lush mountains. This region is known for its historic towns, nature reserves like Addo Elephant Park, and the stunning Amatola Mountains.
This motorcycle journey through South Africa and Lesotho promises a perfect blend of adventure, scenic beauty, and cultural richness, all enjoyed on mostly tarmac roads that make for a comfortable and thrilling ride, because we ride Lesotho the other way round and avoid the famous Sani pass.

Your Tailor-Made Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival & Welcome in Addo
You’ll arrive in Port Elizabeth and be picked up by our guide John, who will transfer you to Addo. Your accommodation is a simple guesthouse near the Addo Elephant National Park.
In the evening, we’ll gather as a group at a local restaurant for a delightful dinner and introductions.
Day 2: Addo to Hogsback
Distance: ~350 km
Leaving Addo, we first head past the coast and onto our lunch stop. Turning inland through settler country, past outposts and forts until we head up into the misty heights of the Amathole Mountains.
Our accommodation is an old-style country hotel set in the forests where you can hear and see the endangered Cape Parrot.
Day 3: Hogsback to Maclear
Distance: ~405 km
After breakfast we head out down the twisty mountain pass, leaving the Cape Parrots to squawk their goodbyes and take on our longest day of the ride.
Soon we will be riding up mountain passes, past rural villagers and through the Eastern Cape highland scrub. The majestic Drakensburg looms ahead and our first sight of Lesotho comes into view.
A magical farm stay nestled under rolling hills with good country cuisine awaits us.
Day 4: Maclear to Underberg
Distance: ~320 km
We tackle the short 14km gravel stretch through farmlands and pine forests back to town. Then it’s on the black top once again. Today’s ride takes us through undulating hills, small trading towns and out into the KwaZulu-Natal grasslands. The Drakensberg is constantly in sight as we make our way to the first of our 2-night stops.
Day 5: Underberg
A day off the bike. Here is your chance to either ride to the bottom of Sani Pass or jump on a guided tour up Sani to see what the hype is all about. See the highest pub in Africa?
Dinner is served fresh off a fire with a plethora of salads.
Day 6: Underberg to Bergville
Distance: ~305 km
As we head off east, we pass through more rolling hills and dales, through little towns. Taking the old road through the Midlands Meander we start heading north. Passing the Amphitheatre and up into the clouds for our next overnight stop at a hotel.
Day 7: Bergville to Motebong
Distance: ~285 km
Winding mountain passes, huge reservoirs, Golden Gate National Park are all before an early lunch in the little town of Clarens.
Then it’s onwards towards the Lesotho border. Through the bustling towns and into the countryside. Our overnight stop will be near the headwaters of the Katse Dam.
Day 8: Motebong to Malealea & Extra Round Trip
Distance: ~250 km + 100 km (optional)
For those that want to see the dam wall at Katse we will leave at around 5am. Head off through twisty’s, through villages until we ride across the wall. 9m wide at the top, 60m wide at the base, 710m long and 185m high making it the second tallest dam wall in Africa. Then head back to the lodge for breakfast.
Then it’s back over the pass and onto the busy roads leading passed the capitol, Maseru. The lowlands of Lesotho, still above 1,800m, wind away to our next 2 night stop.
Day 9: Malealea
Time to pause.
Here the folk who want to indulge in horse riding, hiking and exploring are going to be in their element. Book a horse trek on the sure-footed Basotho ponies, or just chill and relax in the beautiful gardens. Pre-dinner drinks are enjoyed while being serenaded by the local choir and band. The choice is yours to either ride the 7km of gravel to the lodge or park your bike in the local constabulary lock-up and take the truck in.
The road is adventurous but easily do-able for the average rider.
Day 10: Malealea to Semongkong
Distance: ~180 km
Off we go to one of the highest single drop waterfalls in Southern Africa, the Maletsunyane Falls.
The road to these falls can either be ridden on your bike or book a guided 4×4 tour from our overnight accommodation. Either way they have to be seen. Get back in time to enjoy a beer on the veranda overlooking the river, watching the comings and goings of the villagers as they go about their daily routines.
Day 11: Semongkong to Mount Moorosi
Distance: ~125 km
Leaving Semongkong behind us, we head off towards the hills again, stopping to look back at the huge Jurassic Basalt cliffs that form the gorge.
Winding roads, small villagers and waving children dot the landscape on the way to the next stop.
A short 4.5 km gravel road leads us to our overnight stop.
The accommodation is traditional Basotho Huts, the food is traditional Basotho food and the hospitality is traditional Basotho hospitality. You will have a chance to explore the Battle site of Mount Moorosi and where the British laid siege to the Baputhi people, with a local guide.
Day 12: Mount Moorosi to Burgersdoorp
Distance: ~235 km
Our last ride in the Kingdom of the Sky has come all too soon. We cross into South Africa on the southwestern border.
Coffee is in a little frontier town before heading off on the smooth tar towards our lunch and fuel stop.
Then through the grasslands of the Eastern Cape and onto our home for the night. Karoo Lamb is the order of the day.
Day 13: Burgersdoorp to Addo
Distance: ~385 km
The last day on the road, however the scenery is still breath-taking.
Sweeping past grass plains that give way to scrub filled koppies “small hills” and onto wide open plains of the Great Karoo. Just before we get home there is one last mountain pass thrown in for good measure.
Back past the fence of Addo Elephant National Park so keep your eyes peeled for the inhabitants and then it’s into home base.
The last supper is at one of the restaurants in the area, after which you will drag your travel weary bones off to bed and get ready for a deep sleep.
Day 14: Departure or Safari
Fly home and say good-bye to that beautiful, scenic adventure or embark on 2 more days of safari.
Day 14 & 15: Optional Safari Package
Two-day Wildlife Experience, including a Game Drive in Addo Park and Cheetah Tracking at Mountain Zebra National Park.
Two extra nights of B&B, entry fees and all transport and guiding included.
